Zooming-Out with the end in mind brings life and situations into sharper focus.

When we remember that everything ends – lives, moments, relationships, projects, roles, careers – we see more clearly what truly matters. Death isn’t just about loss; it’s a lens that brings meaning, urgency, and intention to how we live right now.

Zooming-Out in the death dimension isn’t about fear – it’s about clarity. It reminds us that time is limited, choices matter, and what we do now becomes the story we leave behind. At work, the same lens asks what we will be glad we did when a project, a role or a career comes to an end. Deadlines are a small version of the same idea: a little pressure can help us focus, too much does not.

Ways in

This dimension invites us to reflect on:

  • The end of life
  • The end of moments, phases, projects, roles, and situations
  • Impermanence – nothing lasts forever
  • Legacy and how we’ll be remembered
  • Living in alignment with our deepest values
  • Deadlines as useful limits, not just pressure
  • Endings done well: closing a project, a role or a relationship
  • Knowing when to stop or let go

Questions to help Zoom-Out in the death dimension

  • How will this look when it’s about to end?
  • How does this moment change when you remember it will not last?
  • When you look back on this, how will you wish you had acted, and how can you act that way now?
  • How do you want people to feel when they think of you, or of this, long after it is over?
  • What legacy, if any, do you want to leave behind?
  • If this project or role ended tomorrow, what would you want to have achieved?
  • What will we be proud of when we look back on this together?
  • How could you use this deadline, rather than panic about it?
  • What is no longer working that you could let go of?
  • If you were starting this from scratch today, would you still choose it?
  • How can we end this well, for everyone involved?
