He coined the term \u2018Neuroleadership\u2019 and is the Director of the NeuroLeadership Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his book &#8220;Your Brain at Work&#8221; (2009), he introduces the SCARF model, representing five social domains that influence human behaviour:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">S<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">tatus<\/span><strong>:<\/strong> Our relative importance to others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>C<\/strong>ertainty<\/span><strong>:<\/strong> The ability to predict the future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>A<\/strong>utonomy<\/span><strong>:<\/strong> A sense of choice and control over events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>R<\/strong>elatedness<\/span><strong>:<\/strong> Feeling safe with others, sensing social connections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>F<\/strong>airness<\/span><strong>:<\/strong> Perception of fair connections and exchanges with others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perspectives plays a powerful role in this model.  Our brain processes perceived social threats and rewards with the same intensity as physical ones. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">S<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">tatus<\/span><strong>:<\/strong> A compliment or a criticism can change our perceived status even though no physical change has occurred (e.g. job role or rank).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>C<\/strong>ertainty<\/span><strong>:<\/strong> People&#8217;s comfort level for uncertainty and ambiguity varies. Providing a vision or plan for the future will be received with varying degrees of enthusiasm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>A<\/strong>utonomy<\/span><strong>:<\/strong> Giving people choice and the extent to which people feel they have choice are two different things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>R<\/strong>elatedness<\/span><strong>:<\/strong> This too is subjective. People can feel lonely in a crowd. People can feel highly connected to people on the other side of the world, more so than people physically close to them. A communication interpreted in a way that is different to what was intended could undermine a sense of relatedness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>F<\/strong>airness<\/span><strong>:<\/strong> Again, fairness is subjective. What seems fair to one person may seem unfair to another. Personal values and expectations can have a significant influence. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two ways in which we can apply this model are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1) Our behaviour:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Noticing when we are drawn towards something (approach a perceived reward) or withdraw from something (avoid a perceived threat).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2) Other&#8217;s behaviour:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Noticing when others are drawn towards something (approach a perceived reward) or withdraw from something (avoid a perceived threat).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In each situation, we can use the SCARF model to zoom-out on a person\u2019s behaviour, including our own, and explore what may be driving it: Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness or Fairness?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a summary from the man himself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"David Rock on the SCARF Model\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5Wu33SdjeCs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
