Zoom Levels

Pin a situation on the map and zoom out, one level at a time, from your street to the stars. At each level, a wider question. Then zoom back in and decide what to do.

  1. Think of a situation. Something on your mind at work or in life. Put it in a few words if you like: it becomes the pin on the map.
  2. Zoom out, one level at a time. Six levels, from your street to the stars. At each one, ask yourself the question, or try another.
  3. Zoom back in. Which level helped most? Back at street level, decide what you will do.

Why zoom levels?

When we are zoomed-in on a problem, it fills the whole screen. Zooming out on a map does what Zoom-Out does in the mind: the problem stays where it is, but everything around it comes into view, the people, the place, the years ahead, and the vastness beyond. Each level here is a different Zoom-Out, and each question comes from one of the Zoom-Out Coaching Cards.

Zooming back in matters as much as zooming out. A wider view helps you see; action happens at street level, so the last step brings you back with something to do.

It works on your own, or with a coach or a team on a shared screen. For another way to step back, spin the Compass Spinner.
