It’s the ability to observe yourself rather than just be yourself – to see your thoughts, emotions, and identity from a wider, kinder perspective. Here, the goal isn’t to erase the self, but to loosen the grip of self-centred thinking and view yourself as part of something larger.

Zooming-Out from the self helps soften the ego, lessen stress and suffering, and relate to ourselves with greater honesty, humility, and kindness.

At work, it shows up as less defensiveness, more openness to feedback, and better judgement under pressure.

Ways in

This dimension involves:

  • Self-observation and awareness
  • Stepping outside your automatic thoughts and identity
  • Seeing the self as flexible, not fixed or absolute
  • Balancing self-focus with selflessness
  • Recognising that the “self” is only one piece of a much larger picture
  • Noticing how your role or position shapes how you see things
  • Pausing between what happens and how you respond
  • Finding another equally true way to read a situation

Questions to help Zoom-Out in the self dimension

  • What are you thinking or feeling right now, and can you simply observe it?
  • How is your mind shaping what you’re experiencing?
  • What happens if you step outside yourself and view this from the outside?
  • How might this look if you remove yourself from the centre of the story?
  • How might you hold a more flexible idea of who you are, beyond this role or this situation?
  • What changes when you view yourself with compassion instead of criticism?
  • What would you advise a friend or colleague in your position?
  • What is your ego trying to protect here, and does it need to?
  • What might you be bringing to this that you cannot see?
  • Can you pause, and choose how you respond rather than simply reacting?
  • Is there another equally true way to read this situation?
  • Are you protecting your own role, or helping the whole thing succeed?
